Communicating with Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or Deaf-Blind individuals

Your Rights Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

People who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or Deaf-Blind have the same rights as hearing individuals under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This includes protections under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and Title II of the ADA.

When communicating with the Deaf or Hard of Hearing

 – If you can sign: Use sign language.
– If you cannot sign: Call TRIAD to request a language interpreter.

Why interpreters are needed:

– Many Deaf individuals rely on American Sign Language (ASL) as their primary language.

– Lipreading and written English are often challenging for the deaf and hard of hearing community.

In case of a medical emergency or legal situation, Deaf and Hard of Hearing have the right to a qualified interpreter for effective communication.
